Weather & Climate · The Last Frontier

About

The mission

Forecast Alaska is the definitive portal for the Last Frontier's weather and climate — built to make the official National Weather Service forecast fast, clean and legible for all 30 boroughs and census areas, from the Tongass rainforest of the Panhandle to the Beaufort coast of the North Slope.

Alaska is a fifth of the United States and it does not have one climate, it has most of them: a temperate rainforest that takes 200 inches of rain a year, a continental Interior that swings 140 degrees between July and January, a Bering coast with no road and no shelter from autumn storms, and an Arctic that is warming faster than anywhere else in the country. Three NWS forecast offices — Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau — cover it. Forecast Alaska is being built to tell that whole story, borough by borough, region by region.

The design language

The look borrows from the American Interstate system — the reflective paper, the green guide signs, the blue service signs, the brown recreation signs, and the red-white-and-blue route shields — set in Overpass, the typeface drawn from the Highway Gothic lettering on those signs. Alaska takes a cold glacier paper and a midnight-sun gold accent, the gold of the Big Dipper on the state flag — its own note in the network.

Metro & region sites

Alaska is covered close-up by 10 region sites, each on its own subdomain of forecastalaska.com — the same maps, the same live radar and the same climate record as this site, drawn to one metro or region instead of the whole state, with a page for every city in it. They are part of Forecast Alaska, not separate sites: /about on any of them lands back here.

Companions & the network

Alaska is the only state in the network with no state line to cross: its neighbours are Yukon and British Columbia, and they are ghosted on the map with Forecast Canada behind them. The other Forecast <State> sites — Forecast Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Maine, Colorado, California, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Carolinas, Dakotas, Arizona, Missouri, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Mexico, Nevada, Kentucky, Louisiana, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, Hawaii, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Virginia, New England, Great Plains, Canada — are all part of the same system, and as the map fills in the companions will interlock here too.
